Insights from Neil Patel, Content Marketing

In essence what content marketing is, it’s a way for you as a business owner to educate, teach your customers and potential customers about products, services or any other problems that they may have. So by giving tips, writing articles, educating them, it actually helps out. You can do this in the form of a blog,a white paper, a webinar, a video. The possibilities
are endless. The reason this is important is because it helps you build trust. And when someone trusts you, not only are they more likely to buy your products or services, but they are also more likely to tell their friends, their family members about your company. The way I get my inspiration and the way you can get your inspiration too is by actually asking potential customers through surveying.Just say, hey, what do you want me to blog on? What do you want me to write? What problems do you have? What can I help you solve? If you’re selling tennis rackets, they may want to know how to actually swing a tennis racket, how to make a serve, how to respond back when someone serves you. Or, if you’re getting
a ton of support inquiries or sales inquiries and people are asking specific questions, you can start writing on those topics and help people solve them so that way you don’t get those questions anymore. When you’re trying to understand who your customers are and what they want, you should also check out Steve Blanks’s Lean Approach, as that will help
you throughout this whole process. When you put out this content on your website, or on other channels like YouTubeTwitter,or Facebook; one, track views. Two, Google Analytics, which is a free tool from Google, will actually show you how much traffic these pieces of content are driving back to your site. And three, see how much more search
engine traffic you’re also getting. With content not only do people link to it from their sites, but you’ll notice that it ranks in Google or Bing and you start getting more search traffic. The thing with content marketing is you have to give it time. Don’t expect great results within three months or even six months, but you should see traction. Within the first
three months, you should see more traffic to your site. Whether it’s from search, social media sites, whatever it may be you should be seeing more traffic. Within six months, your traffic should grow even more. Within a year, you should try to figure out how to monetize your content marketing efforts and actually generate some sales from it. Once you have your content marketing efforts up and running, the way you would actually monetize them is through ads. And not ads in a traditional way in which you’re advertising on other sites, you’re actually advertising on your own sites. If you have a blog that’s giving all this educational videos, tactics away for free, put up ads for your own products or services. People will click on them and they can drive them to a page that you sell those products.

If you have a white paper on your site, let’s say on how to play tennis or how to improve your tennis skills, you can actually ask someone to give you their name, email address, phone number before you let them download that white paper. Within your blog or your website or content efforts on those pages, you can actually put a box that says sign up for our free newsletter;we’re going to give you tips, advice, ebooks.
And collect their name and email address in exchange for these tips. You can take their email addresses and eventually market products, services to them, maybe even offer them discounts during holidays. That’s how you monetize your content marketing efforts.

Insights from Neil Patel, Online Marketing

I love helping out other entrepreneurs. Before you actually start marketing your product or service, there’s one really important thing you need to make sure you’re doing. You actually need to make sure your product is solving a problem. Not just any problem, but a problem people are really facing. If you’re not helping people out, no one’s going to buy anything from you. Once you get them to your website you actually need to make sure you’re messaging, right? What you’re telling neil patel online marketingthem you’re solving is really easy to understand. If a 5‑year‑old or a fifth grader can actually understand what you’re selling in just a few words, you’re doing well. If you’re trying to use this mumbo‑jumbo, technical language that very few people understand, you’re probably not going to get too many conversions or sales from your website. If you’re looking for ways to describe your business in a really simple way, because no matter how complex your business is, there is a simple
way to describe it, you should check out Nathan Gold’s series called Powerful Presentations. A conversion on a website really depends on the type of website you have. For an E‑commerce company, a conversion is typically a sale of a product. For a lead generation company, such as a consulting company, it would be someone filling out an inquiry, I’m interested in your services. For a, let’s say auto insurance company, it could be someone running a quote. The way you go about getting more conversions is actually getting to know your visitor or your customer. You can’t expect someone to come to your website and convert right away. Think of it like dating. You can’t just go out there and say, hi, my name is Neil. What’s your name? Oh, it’s Jane? Let’s go get married.Same thing goes with the internet. You can’t expect someone to come to your website and just be like, hi, my name’s Neil. Here’s my company. Oh, you’re Jane? Spend $1,000 on my site. Doesn’t really happen. But what does happen is saying, hey, I’m Neil. Here’s my website. Here’s products and services I sell. Well look, here’s some more details, here’s some more reviews. You got to get to know someone. You got to get them to understand what you’re selling, why should they buy from you. And typically, the more steps you make them take the more likely they are to convert.
For example, if you’re looking to get married to someone you probably have to date them first. You may even see their family, their parents, and then you may end up getting married. The same goes with the internet, happens ata much faster rate. But someone comes to your website, they get to know you, your company, your values, the products, the services you offer, what other people think of it. They may even give you their name and email address so you can follow up with more information. Then eventually once they feel comfortable they then convert. The way you need to look at online marketing is like a funnel. So think of everyone coming to your website at the top. A good portion of people will come to your home page. From there a portion of them will go to your product page. And then a small portion of them will go to your cart page. And lastly, a very small percent will actually check out. Sure, you’re going to lose a majority of the people throughout the funnel. And that’s okay. That’s online marketing. You can’t expect everyone to convert. It’s like saying hey, I have a store with ina mall and everyone who enters the mall is going to buy from me. Just doesn’t happen. If you’re really going to be an entrepreneur and try to grow your business, there’s something you need to know. You need to give this time. Nothing’s going to happen right away. So as long as you keep at it, you keep trying to improve the business, some months, some weeks, maybe even some years may not work out the way you want. As long as you keep at it, you learn from your mistakes and try to avoid the same ones over and over again, eventually you will succeed.

Insights from Neil Patel, Email Marketing

So even though email marketing is one of the oldest marketing channels out there, it’s still really valuable in the age of digital marketing. If someone gives you their email address they’re taking a step, an action. They’re showing some sort of a commitment. Now when you email them you’re actually building a rapport with them, right? You’re getting to know them, they’re getting to know you.And eventually when you email them about your product or service or whatever you have to sell, they are more likely to buy because they actually feel that personal connection, right? Not only are they connected to you, but they took the time and effort to give you their email address. So if you’re interested in leveraging email marketing, here are a few tips for you. Try to limit the amount of links that you add within the email to three. So if you start adding five, six, seven links, a lot of clients like gmail or hotmail will automatically push it in the spam box. Think about how you actually send emails to a friend versus a business colleague. If you send an email to a friend you’re just like hey, what’s up? You wouldn’t make it all proper and formal. You can be very casual. And by doing that, people feel, oh, Neil is my friend or whoever it may be is your friend that’s sending the email. And they’re more likely to open it, right? That casual tone, talking to them as if you’re having a conversation versus talking at themis going to make it so they’re actually going to open up the email and read it.At the end of your email you should add a P.S. A lot of people won’t end up reading your full email, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if you write the best content ever in the email, you can’t force everyone to read it. So by adding a P.S. at the very end that’s just one sentence, try to limit it to around 20 words max, and summarize what the whole purpose of the email is and link to wherever you want to send them, you’re more likely to actually increase your click‑throughs and your conversions. The right amount of communication you should be doing through email really depends on your business. Whatever product you’re selling, or service you’re selling, how often do people need to buy it? So if people need to buy it on a weekly basis, ideally you should be sending out emails on a weekly basis. If people need to buy it on a yearly basis you should still be sending emails at least once a month so that way you’re keeping in touch with them so they don’t forget about you, right? But in general, always send out at least one email a month to your list.
