I'm Lynsey May, I'm a writer with a background
in copywriting, and online content managementfor business clients.
I know that promoting yourself is hard.Writers tend to really hate that stuff - and
I don't blame them, it is really difficult. But as publishing margins get smaller and
smaller, the chances are that they're goingto want you to help promote your book and
your career as well as you can.You know how sometimes if you have a friend,
you're able to just talk about them, promotethem, sell them - brilliantly - but when it
comes to yourself you get all shy and embarrassed.Well try and make something out of that. See
if you can do that for yourself.Think about you as a separate person, as a
third person, as a friend that you want topromote.
And if you find that too hard, try gettinga couple of your friends to sit down and write
a couple of lines about you.And then, use that as your basis.
So when it comes to writing copy for yourwebsite, you've really got to think about
the fact that it's like your creative work.Everything that's there needs to be there
for a reason. It could be that your goalis simply to highlight your personality. It
could be that you're trying to sell your book.It could be that you want to advertise the
fact that you're amazing at talking at events. What you need to do is make sure that your
copy accurately reflects those things. When it comes to your website, just try and
harness the passion that you feel when you'rewriting creatively.
I know it feels like they're worlds apart, but they really aren't. There's a lot of crossover
there. For example, you could use your skills to
wax lyrical about one of your favourite subjects,on your blog.
Or, you could use your precision and abilitywith words to write very a short and snappy
homepage that will get people talking straightaway.
If you spend a lot of time crafting wordsand images for your day job, don't let that
talent go to waste.Make sure you use it on your own website, too
